Build a Better World Reading Club

The Library begins Summer Reading Club on Tuesday June 27 at 1 p.m. with the delightful and entertaining Moreland the Magician.  This year’s theme is Build a Better World.

This annual program seeks to keep children’s reading and spelling abilities in top form while school is recessed for the summer months.  Children can enjoy a variety of special programs, chart their reading progress, and receive incentives each week as they move toward their individual reading goals.

Participants can register by calling 585-335-6720 or stopping in at the Library.  Summer Reading Club is for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Book Sale Highest Total

Director Terry Dearing reported the total book sale receipts at $4022.65!  This annual event during Dogwood Week requires many volunteers and assistance from the Library’s many supporters.  Last year’s receipts were $3707 and the increase is likely from the large number of excellent nonfiction titles that were available.

The Library Board of Trustees and Staff members are very appreciative of the support of this fundraiser.

Library Budget 2017-2018 Approved May 2nd

Library Director Terry Dearing reported passage of the 2017-2018 Budget and election of Trustees at the annual public vote for the Library on Tuesday, May 2 held in the Library’s Holden meeting room.  In addition, Mary Harrington was elected to an unexpired term that will end June 2019 and Sherrie Reilly was elected as a Trustee position for a full term of 5 years which expires June 30, 2022.  In the fall of 2016, Mary Harrington was appointed to replace Dan Beiswenger.  Sherrie Reilly, replacing Lynne Blum whose term ends June 30, 2017, rejoins the Board having served previously from 2005 to 2010.

Two other school district public libraries conducted their annual vote the same day, Wadsworth Library in Geneseo and Bell Memorial in Nunda.  The results of Dansville Public Library’s vote on the budget levy was 49 yes and 7 no.

41st Annual Used Book Sale May 15

Monday at 10 a.m. is the start of the 41st Annual Used Book Sale during Dogwood Week.  There are hundreds of items from which to choose — jigsaw puzzles, great non-fiction, children’s books, the best in fiction, and many, many paperbacks for your enjoyment.

Director Terry Dearing reminds all shoppers to leave their boxes outside or in their cars.  The Library will provide boxes and bags.  This first day of used book shopping is very crowded, so please be patient, ask volunteers to hold your planned purchases at the check out table, and enjoy!

The Annual Used Book Sale is supported by The Friends of the Library, Staff members, and additional volunteers.  This year funds received will be used toward additional downloadable books.

It’s a Time to Celebrate!

The Library Board and Staff are pleased to announce the launch of the new and revised website and Library homepage, a change authored by Ben Witte and assisted by the former webmaster, Dr. Tony Witte.

Originally, the Library went “live” in March of 1996.  Up to this point, the site has been primarily “static” with assistance needed from the webmaster to update most of the information.  Not only is the artwork brighter and new, but the site is now mobile friendly, and Library staff will have control over content in a new and proactive way.

The Friends of the Dansville Public Library have made this momentous action possible.  The Board appreciates the continued support from the Wittes who have done so much to bring our Library into the mainstream.  The Library Board and Staff welcome comments and suggestions as the new site takes shape.

Family Movie Night

Ms Brandy announces the next in the Family Movie Night series on Tuesday March 14 at 5:30 p.m. It’s a great time to be with your children, have pizza, a beverage and a movie. This week’s event is sponsored by Tony’s Pizza and Bill and Norma Forsythe.

The Library Looks Toward a Busy Month

Library Director Teresa Dearing reports a busy time as the spring season approaches. Children and visitors will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2, from 3-5 p.m. with crafts, games and stories. Then on March 4, any adult can bring their youngster to the Children’s Tea Party on Saturday, March 4 from 1-3 p.m. This is a ticketed event with a suggested donation of $3; “scholarships” are available if needed.
Finally, gardeners are urged to attend “Tips For Growing Great Plants” on Wednesday March 8 at 6:30 p.m. Master Gardener Julie Brocklehurst- Wood will inform and advise those in attendance on how to get the most from the garden with seeds or plants.
Brandy Finocchario also reminds families of the next Family Movie Nights, February 28 and March 14 at 5:30 p.m. with pizza and a movie. For more information on any event, call the Library at 585-335-6720.
